Old Tehri town had been submerged to build the controversial Tehri Dam and the district headquarters have been shifted to New Tehri.

 Tehri district is surrounded by Pauri, Dehra Dun, Uttarkashi and Rudraprayag districts. Yamunotri origin of  Yamuna river is located in the district. Ghuttu is the base camp for spectacular Khatling Glacier and beautiful Panwali bugyal.  The district is rich  in flora and fauna. Narendra Nagar, Krti Nagar, Chamba, Devprayag are other towns of the district.

TEHRI TOWN

Situated on the confluence of Bhagirathi and Bhilangana once capital of Tehri State and founded by King Sudarshan Shah in 1803 when Garhwal was partitioned in 2 parts viz British Garhwal and Tehri. British Garhwal was given to British on account of war expenses against Gurkhas. The capital of Tehri state was shifted to Tehri town in 1804. It is a junction point of five roads to Rishikesh, Uttarkashi, Srinagar, Devprayag and Ghansali. The areas of Tehri town and adjoining has been submerge in the controversial  Rs 3000 crores Tehri Dam Project to generate 2400 MW power. 

After returning from America, Swami Ram Trirth spent his last days in a hut and took Samadhi into river Bhilangana on 17 Oct 1906 (Deepawali day).

New Tehri   

  Developed as new headquarters on a hilltop facing the grand lake is a beautiful hill resort. A branch of G B Pant University of Agriculture and Technology has also been established here.

Devprayag

 475 70 Km from Rishikesh situated on the confluence of Bhagirathi and Alakhnanda rivers, hence after called Ganges. Ancient temple of Raghunathji. Brahma Kund, Vashist Kund, Vaital Kund, Surya Kund, Varah Tirth, Pushvatika, Vaital Shila, Vashist Shila, temples of Bharat, Bhairava, Bhushandi, Durga and Vishveshvara are also located. It is said that a bath at Vaital Shila cures leprosy. Pandas of Badrinath also live here.
Chamba

 60 Km from Mussoorie and 48 Km from Rishikesh on the way to Gangotri and Yamunotri presents splendid view of Bhagirathi valley and mejectic peaks of Himalayan range. Also famous for apple orchards.
Kunjapuri 1675 A temple of Goddess Durga  on a hill top, 7 Km from Narendra Nagar (2Km walk) amidst a lush green forest presents a panoramic view of Badarpunch, Nanda Devi and Trisul peaks.
Surkanda Devi 2750 Situated on the top of a hill surrounded by deodar trees and wild flowers with chirping of birds, 32 Km from Mussoorie said to be a Sidhapeeth where head of Sati fell while Lord Shiva was carrying her corpse to Kailash. Presents beautiful view of Hialayan peaks and Dehra Dun, Rishikesh, Chakrata and Pratap Nagar.
Budha  Kedar 1750 A Shiva Temple  is located at the confluence of Bal Ganga and Dharam Ganga rivers 60 Km from Tehri. Presents spectacular view of Ganges, Doon Valley and sun set.
Pratap Nagar     Founded by King Pratap Shah is a quiet and calm place with panoramic view.
Narendra Nagar 1067 Old Headquarters of Tehri District founded by King Narendra Shah in 1924.
